Upcoming Show: Sam Phillips December 5
I once spoke briefly to Sam Phillips at a mini-tour show she was doing in Tyson’s Corner at a now defunct Borders. Odd location or not, she put on a terrific show. Funny and charming. Afterward I went up to her and told her the first time I’d heard her song Reflecting Light, on a cross-country flight back from LA to DC, it brought tears to my eyes. She smiled and, without a trace of sarcasm, said “Now my career is complete.” We’ll interview her on December 5 to talk about her new album, Human Contact is Never Easy, her new work on the new Gilmore Girls series on Netflix, and whatever else she wants to chat about.

Sam Phillips writes poignant songs that slip under your skin and inhabit your bones. Sadness. Loneliness. Exquisite beauty. Fragile love. She's come a long way from being a Christian pop star to later starring as Jeremy Irons' kinky girlfriend in one of the Die Hard movies.
I'm a little nervous to interview her because you never know if someone you have admired lives up to it when you finally get to speak. David Poe in conversation matched his musical greatness. So did Marshall Crenshaw. On the other hand, Gore Vidal was a bit of a cranky old guy when I met him and spoke for about three minutes. The less I know about him, the more I like him.
